Online Catalog Tutorial
In April 2009, the library system adopted a new automation system (Polaris). Since Polaris is
configured differently from SirsiDynix Horizon, our previous system, there are several aspects of the
catalog we would like to highlight. The first three links below will explain the three main tabs of
the catalog (Search, Patron Account, and Help). The last link will provide actual search examples and
explanations of the search results.
- Search Tab: Performs various types of searches.
- Patron Account Tab: Allows you to access/view your library
account.
- Help Tab: Answers a list of frequently asked questions.
- Tutorial: Step-by-step instructions on performing a search.
You can search the library's online catalog via the library's homepage available at
http://www.bcslibrary.org by clicking on the "Catalog" link on the left
or any library OPAC computer terminal. Navigate using the 3 tabs at the top of the catalog page
(Search -- Patron Account -- Help).
Library Automation History
When the Bryan Library acquired its first computer in 1981, the concept of automating the card
catalog, the circulation services, and cataloging was a staggering thought. Technology to automate
libraries was very expensive and still evolving at that time. Equipment was ordered and installed in
July 1996, with the card catalog and cataloging going online first. Barcoding, an intensive project,
took several months. Circulation went online in May of 1997.
By mid 1997, the Bryan+College Station Public Library System became completely automated and
eventually phased out the use of the original card catalog. All of the library system's items have
been added to a searchable database called the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). The OPAC allows
patrons to search for any item with relative ease. It lists which library owns it as well as if it is
currently available.
