Confederate Veterans Close Annual Reunion Here
OFFICERS ARE NAMED, TAKING VACANT POSTS
Austin Veteran Heads Green's Brigade Survivors
[...] morning, beginning promptly at 9 o'clock, and the Sixtieth annual reunion of Hood's and the Fifty-first annual
reunion of Green's Brigade passed into history.
Mrs. Libbie Wade Cameron, life secretary of Green's Brigade, announced that on account of there being only three
members of that brigade present, no separate business session would be held, and Miss Katie Daffan, life secretary of
Hood's Brigade, made the same announcement because only four of Hood's Brigade were in attendance. So the business of
both brigades was transacted in open joint session.
The following were elected to honorary membership in both Hood's and Green's Brigade: Mrs. Whit Boyd of Houston; Mrs.
Homer Wade, Dallas; Col. Bill Smart of Dallas and Fort Worth; Mrs. L. Lichenstein, Houston; Mrs. Estella M. Sparks,
Houston; Mrs. C. L. Guild, Houston; Mrs. J. Shepard, Houston, and the daughter-in-law and niece of Captain John H.
Roberts of Arcadia, who accompanied him to this convention.
The following visitors were introduced and made brief talks: Mrs. Browning Matthews of Lampasas, daughter of Life
Commander W. H. Browning, and also his grand daughter, Mrs. J. V. Gerens of Taylor; Col. Bill Smart; Mrs. J. S. Doane
of Bryan; Mrs. Lichenstein of Houston; Miss Juliett Wright of Austin, daughter of Col. H. C. Wright, chaplain of
Green's Brigade.
Mrs. H. C. Wright of Austin, known as the "song bird" of the reunion, sang a group of Southern melodies all of which
were thoroughly enjoyed. An outstanding musical feature of the morning program was a violin number given by Mrs. J.
V. Gerens of Taylor, grand daughter of Judge Browning, who accompanied him to the reunion.
Greeting from absent friends of the reunion were read by Mrs. Cameron and Miss Daffan, from Miss Decca Lamar West of
Waco; Col. R. D. Chapman, Houston; the two daughters of Mrs. Libbie Wade Cameron at Dallas; William A. Cline at
Houston.
This morning the following telegram was received from Col. John B. Hood, Jr., son of the commander of Hood's Brigade,
from his home at Jonestown, Miss. The wire read: "Returned late last night from Boston too late to accept invitation
this year. With you in spirit. Loving greetings to Miss Daffan, brigade and friends."
A message was sent from the assembled reunion, to Col. J. O. Bradfield of Austin, chaplain of Hood's Brigade, who is
ill in a hospital in that city, expressing sincere regret because of his absence. A telegram was also sent to Mrs. B.
B. Knolle, of Houston, friend of the brigades who is ill at her home.
Judge W. H. Browning paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of Captain Jim Dallas, who was the vice president of
Hood's Brigade (Continued on page 6) and had passed on since the meeting held in Bryan in 1930. Captain E. W. B.
Leach of Houston, was elected vice president, to fill the place made vacant by the death of Captain Dallas.
After expressions of deep regret because of the death of Captain W. E. Selman, president of Green's Brigade, on June
19, 1931, at his home in Terrell, by unanimous vote Capt. W. T. Wroe of Austin was elected president of Green's
Brigade.
An address was made by Hon. F. L. Henderson of Bryan, in which he paid glowing tribute to the remnant of the "line of
Gray" assembled for this reunion, for all Confederate veterans everywhere and for the inspiration their lives brought
to the citizenship of today.
The closing song, "God Be With You Till We Meet Again," was sung, the benediction was said by Rev. Father J. B.
Gleissner, and the convention was adjourned.
-----
A resolution of sorrow over the death of the president of Green's Brigade, W. E. Selman, who died recently was
adopted this morning by that organization, after being reported by Juliette Wright, chairman.
